On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
