"Our new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong care," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, explains the organization.
GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity
Even under the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.
The advice encourages nations and manufacturers to widen access, via strategies like patent sharing.
Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.
