Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
