Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of numerous the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him since they are skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for others, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and clear reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts in US history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?
America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both modesty and faith, a blend that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
