Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
