Minister States MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in every modern cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of official activities, from transport usage to discussions habits.
