A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
