The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
