RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
